A nice outdoor destination for nature lovers or for those who want to escape Riga for a day.
Ķemeri National Park was established in 1997 to protect the wetlands, forests, lakes, moors, marshes and Littorina Sea period lagoon lakes that are located in the area.
The park is named after the Ķemeri village, witch is located in the territory of the park. The park are is around 381km2 wide – it stretches from the Riga Gulf in the North to the Kalnciems village in the South, its East border is touching Sloka village, and almost reaching Slampe village West of it.
Kemeri National Park is the third largest national park in Latvia – one of the most significant part of the park is the Great Ķemeri Moorland wich you can see in the pictures here.
Many of the mineral-springs and muds from the moorland have been used for therapeutically in resorts, spas and sanatoriums, one of them was Ķemeri Sanatorium.
Unfortunately the official page for Ķemeri Park is down as of 2012, Jan 12 – hopefully it will come back soon 🙂
