More than 120 tall ships, sailing ships, brig-rigged sailing-ships and the biggest operational wooden sailing vessel in the world will visit Riga from 25th to 28th of July as a part of The Tall Ships regatta. Unofficially the predecessor of this event started out already in 1938, as a response to the decline of sailing ships, and today more than 3000 participants of 2013 race keep this tradition alive and after ten years regatta is back in Riga.

The main goal of this race is “sail training” – education of young people and the development of essential life skills on tall ships. Because of this at least half of each ship’s crew must be younger than 25 and the main prize is awarded to the crew that has done most to “promote international friendship and understanding”.

Locals and visitors of Riga will have a chance not only to observe the ships, but as well to get on the deck, talk to the crew and participate in other activities. 20 A class sailing ships will be welcoming visitors on their decks as early as 10 am between Vanšu bridge and Riga passenger port, so be patient and prepare to encounter a lot of spectators.

Most of the ships will come from Helsinki, where they arrive today – on 17th, and after leaving Riga ships gonna head to Szczecin in Poland to finish this month long Baltic regatta. So if you’re in Riga from 25th to 28th don’t miss a wonderful chance to check out some of the most impressive tall ships sailing the seas today.
