There are two very interesting photography events this year in Riga. Riga Photography Biennial will start on April 15 and exhibitions and events will take place also in May and June. Riga Photomonth is a biannual international photography festival, it will be held on May and June and offer 10 exhibitions and 20 events and this years common theme is ”Territories, Borders and Checkpoints”. Both events exhibit international and local photographers.
Riga Photography Biennial
First exhibition for Riga Photography Biennial is Protick Sarker’s (Bangladesh) exhibition What Remains. Photographer used this project to reconnect with his grandparents. Exhibition is open 15 April – 15 May, 2016 in Latvian Museum of Photography, Mārstaļu iela 8. He will give artist talk on 15 April at 18:00 in Latvian Museum of Photography.
Ivars Grāvlejs (Latvija) ironic collages about advertising and media ” intervention Live and Learn” can be seen on Public transport stops in Riga from Center to Jugla districts 18 April – 1 May, 2016. Ivars Grāvlejs is one of the most controversial contemporary photographers in Latvia.
The work of 3 talented emerging artists in “Riga Photography Biennial 2016 Award Exhibition Seeking the Latest in Photography” from 22 April – 15 May, 2016 in Riga Art Space Intro Hall, Kungu iela 3. Artists Viktorija Eksta and Andrejs Strokins are from Latvia and Alissa Nirgi is from Estonia. Don’t miss a chance to see their work, they are also getting recognized internationally.

Riga Photomonths main exhibition “Territories” 13 May – 16 June in Latvian Railway History Museum. Containing work of seven photographers from Northern- and Eastern Europe. Authors look not only at geographic but also at socio-political and personal borders.

Self Publish Riga are different events about photobooks and self-publishing. It will be possible to explore book collections from Paris Photo – Aperture PhotoBook Awards 2015, photobooks published by KesselsKramer, The Sochi Project publications, Private Albums, books from the Baltics and books from SELF PUBLISH RIGA photobook dummy contest.
JH Engström is internationally known Swedish photograher and his solo exhibition “Trying to Dance” can be seen from 19 May – 26 June in Latvian Museum of Photography. He is also co-curator of festivals main exhibition.
