Latvian National Museum of Art is just renovated.
Latvian National Museum of Art will be open to public after biggest renovation in its history. Opening is on 4th of May at 10:00 am and it will take place at square next to the museum on Esplanade park side. On opening day it is possible to visit museum free of charge and it will be open till 18:00, visitors can enter museum till 17:30.
Building for art museum was built in 1905 and it was first building in Baltics designed specially for museum. Museum building is landmark in boulevards of Riga and it is Latvian cultural heritage. Building is in baroque and classicism style. There are elements in art nouveau style in interior.
Museum was under construction works for 3 years. When renovation was finished in December 2015 museum was opened for few days to visitors. Rigans were very eager to see just renovated building, museum were crowded and people would queue to enter. But it was unusual as there were no artwork inside yet, just beautifully renovated building. Some started to joke that to attract people to art museum all you have to do is to remove all artwork. It will not be the case at the opening on 4th of May collection of artwork will be back and there will open contemporary exhibitions in new underground part of museum and 4th floor.
“Latvian art.19th-20th Century” is museums permanent exhibition, it is about latvian art development and its social, geopolitical and historical context. Now in permanent exhibition will be included artwork from 1945-2000 Soviet occupation years and 90’s. Contemporary Latvian artists Miervaldis Polis (1948) exhibition “Illusion as reality” will be opened in new block of museum from 04.05.-24.07.2016. and latvian painter, graphic artist and pedagogue Boriss Bērziņš (1930 – 2002) exhibition “SILVER/GOLD” will be open in Historic building 4th floor from 04.05. – 24.08.2016.
Museum is wheelchair accessible.
