Martindienas market at Kalnciema Quarter.

Mārtiņdienas market this Saturday November 5 from 10:00-16:00 in Kalnciema Quarter- neighborhood of beautifully renovated 19. century wooden architecture. At the market you can find tasty local food like home baked rye-bread, traditional cheese, hemp butter, jams, honey, smoked meats, sweats and local wines, and i could go on and on but better to check by yourself and try too. Also local crafts and design will be at the market.


There will be creative workshops for kids and parents from 12:00-15:00 and silver casting workshop from 14:00-17:30. Thous with beards can meet special guests from The Beard Cosmetics which are produced in Latvia and get advice and beard correction.

Traditionally Mārtiņdiena is celebrated on November 10 and till that were finished all autumn works, earthworks like plowing. Traditional Mārtiņdienas food is fritters, honey, beer, different meat dishes and rooster or goose. It will be possible to try traditional goose also at the market.

November in Latvia is called patriotic month, November 11 Lāčplēša diena is commemorative day of Latvian army’s victory over the West Russian Volunteer Army led by general Pavel Bermont-Avalov on November 11, 1919 and November 18 is Latvia’s independence day. Craftsmen at the market will be ready for that and offer produce with traditional Latvian folk signs and in colors of Latvia’s flag.
